Education first, and a conversation only if you want one. I'm a licensed life insurance and segregated funds advisor with Affinity Financial Services Inc., working with people across Toronto in person and online.
Coverage that has to stretch around a Toronto mortgage
Mortgage size is the single biggest driver of how much coverage people here work out that they need, and it's the number most often underestimated. The question that usually matters isn't the premium, it's what would have to happen to the home if one income stopped.
Group benefits that end with the job
A lot of downtown employers provide life coverage, which is genuinely useful and frequently misread. It's usually a multiple of salary, it usually ends when the job does, and it rarely reflects what a household actually depends on.
Renting now, buying later
The FHSA changed the picture for first-time buyers, and the detail that catches people is that room only starts building once the account is open. Worth knowing before the year you plan to buy, not during it.
Self-employed and contract income
No group plan, no sick pay, and income that varies by year. Both the protection question and the RRSP-or-TFSA question work differently when the income isn't steady.
Work it through yourself first
Everything on this site is free and needs no sign-up: the coverage and goal calculators, the Discovery Lab interactives, and plain-language articles on TFSAs, RRSPs, RESPs, FHSAs and insurance. Plenty of people never book a call, and that's a perfectly good outcome.
