Education first, and a conversation only if you want one. I am a licensed life insurance and segregated funds advisor with Affinity Financial Services Inc., working with people across Richmond Hill in person and online.
Where qualifications had to be rebuilt here, earning years start later and the catch-up is compressed. Unused RRSP room carries forward, which matters more when the higher-income years arrive late rather than early.
Two incomes in different brackets
When one partner earns considerably more, who contributes to what stops being a detail. Spousal arrangements exist for exactly this, and they tend to matter more than the choice between account types.
Education savings taken seriously
Plenty of households here are saving for university before the child can read. The grant is the part with a deadline; the investment choice inside the plan is the part most often left on autopilot.
Beneficiary rules that differ from home
A named beneficiary on a Canadian policy or segregated fund contract generally means the money goes directly to that person, outside the estate. That is not how it works everywhere, and it surprises people who assume otherwise.
Work it through yourself first
Everything on this site is free and needs no sign-up: the coverage and goal calculators, the Discovery Lab interactives, and plain-language articles on TFSAs, RRSPs, RESPs, FHSAs and insurance. Plenty of people never book a call, and that's a perfectly good outcome.
